IKEA Transportation Plan

Red Hook, Brooklyn, NY

SSE performed the traffic and transportation analysis for the Environmental Impact Statement for a proposed 340,000 square-foot IKEA retail store to be located in a historically industrial waterfront area. The study included over 40 intersections in Brooklyn, NY. SSE also provided recommendations for alternative modes of transportation, including free shuttle bus service from local subways and Brooklyn Borough Hall, a bus route extension and free weekend ferry service. These alternative transportation recommendations were part of an overall regional access plan based on market demand data. In addition to providing transportation recommendations, SSE developed improvements for intersections along Hamilton Avenue — the northern gateway to Red Hook — that would improve safety while increasing capacity. SSE also played an important role in IKEA's community outreach team in working with the Red Hook community and educating the public about the project. The scope included meetings with a variety of community groups, elected officials, agencies, individuals and local businesses.
