SSE conducted a comprehensive study of bus congestion in Downtown Jamaica, Queens. Jamaica is one of the busiest Central Business Districts in New York City outside of Manhattan and serves as a confluence for the termini of three subway lines, the AirTrain connection to JFK Airport, and a Long Island Railroad Station, in addition to dozens of bus routes connecting to outlying areas of Queens. In an effort to speed bus service through this congested area, SSE collected and compiled data on all of the following: bus speeds and causes of delay, pedestrian congestion, signal timing and traffic operations, livery cab activity, bus stop locations, layover and terminal design, bus routings and groupings, transfer activity, and passenger feedback. Based on analysis of these factors, SSE recommended a comprehensive set of recommendations to increase bus speeds and operational efficiency throughout Downtown Jamaica, while improving the experience of passengers.
