Union Station Intercity Bus Terminal

Washington, DC

SSE was selected by Washington DC’s Union Station Redevelopment Corporation to develop a conceptual layout and operating plan for the conversion of the existing bus deck adjacent to Union Station into an intercity bus terminal and intermodal facility. Key elements of this assignment involve optimizing internal traffic circulation and external interfaces, improved pedestrian and vehicular safety, and integration with future Metro access improvements, pending large scale mixed-use development, and the planned H-Street trolley line. Among the challenges were working within an existing, constrained structure, satisfying the needs of multiple bus operators, and developing sufficient capacity to meet DDOT’s goal of relocating the majority of intercity bus operations from existing on-street terminals. Tasks included extensive review of existing data and past studies; developing multiple options for potential bus terminal layouts in an iterative process with the client and bus operators; pedestrian circulation and safety analyses; and traffic circulation analyses, both internal and external to Union Station.
