Bicycle Planning + Engineering

SSE’s urban bicycle infrastructure planning and design experience is unparalleled. Bicycle activity is at an all-time high level in cities across the United States, and communities have responded, making our streets safer and more efficient for bicyclists. We, as a nation, have realized the important part that active transportation plays in our transportation systems and for recreation and health. Cities across the United States are experiencing a renaissance in bicycling, coupled with significant improvements to bicycle infrastructure. Different varieties of bike treatments can be found all over city streets. Demand for bike parking exceeds supply all over the country, keeping public works departments busy installing new racks. Cities have continued to push fresh, new ideas and concepts, like bike boxes and physically protected bike lanes. All this new infrastructure has helped create an excitement for urban bicycling that has never been seen before in our country.

Examples of SSE’s bicycle planning and engineering expertise include the following projects:

• The first and second on-street protected bike lanes in the U.S. (New York City)
• New Jersey’s first on-street protected bike lane (Newark)
• Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway
• Brooklyn Bridge Park Transportation and Access Study
• Bronx River Greenway
• Mount Prospect, IL, Bicycle Master Plan
