Planning for large venues and special events requires a comprehensive approach to traffic engineering and transportation planning that focuses on moving people through all modes of transportation. SSE develops parking management plans, wayfinding signage, and transit service modifications to ease congestion and improve the visitor experience. To help plan for and anticipate event-day crowding, SSE’s analyses include safety engineering, detailed roadway and intersection capacity studies, and pedestrian and vehicular flow simulations for pre- and post-game conditions. By designing and implementing multi-modal improvements, we have changed the way people get to and from events, resulting in cost-effective solutions that can reduce single-occupancy vehicle travel and relieve roadway bottlenecks. Our plans have also incorporated targeted marketing, public service campaigns, and websites that inform and guide visitors and fans, enabling them to choose the easiest and sometimes cheapest way to “get to the game,” be it a small arena or the 2.5 million people that witnessed President Obama’s inauguration.
